Can You Ride An EBIKE on Bike Trails in Wisconsin?

States all over the U.S. are having to create new laws for e-bike usage.  Common issues include where a person can ride the e-bike, speed limits, and their classification.

In Wisconsin, the DNR allows electronic bicycle use on certain state trails including the 400, Ahnapee, Badger, Elroy-Sparta, Glacial Drumlin, Hank Aaron, La Crosse River, Military Ridge, and others listed in WI NR Code 51.73.

Under WI DNR NR 45.05 (3) (em), e-bikes cannot exceed 15 miles per hour while the electric motor is engaged.

There is also an exception that allows the DNR to prohibit ebikes on any trails posted by notice and to open other trails not currently listed.
