Although the numbers are allegedly rising, the number of people who ride bicycles to work is dismal. According to the U.S. census bureau, in 2005 only 0.4% of all American's rode a bicycle to work while 77% drove alone in a car.
In Wisconsin, according to Wisconsin Blue Book 2003-2004 about 80% of Wisconsinites travel to work alone in a car. Of all counties that bicycle, Dane County/Madison had the highest number of bicycle commuters. That number was still only 2%. Interestingly, in Ashland County Wisconsin 8% of the workforce commutes on foot and between 1980 and 2000 the number of people who used public transportation, rode bikes, or walked decreased from 32% to 16%.
