The city of Madison is fortunate to have a great bicycle trail system. The trails offer something for each type of rider from children to adults, roadies, mountain bikers, and commuters. Like most people, I get accustomed to a few routes that I like to ride and fail to take advantage of all the great trails out there. It seems like almost daily the news is reporting something about Madison bicycling or a new trail or effort to improve bicycling in the city.

To help people experience new routes, including myself, I compiled the following list of Madison area bike trails with a brief description of each:


BADGER STATE TRAIL- http://www.badger-trail.com/
From Belleville, WI to the Illinois border. Only a 30 minute ride from Madison. Includes a 1200 foot railroad tunnel.

CAPITAL CITY TRAIL- http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/capcity/
Around the city of Madison and Fitchburg. About 17 miles long, paved, and no fee.

GLACIAL DRUMLIN TRAIL- http://www.glacialdrumlin.com/Home.html
Starts in Cottage Grove and goes East 52 miles to Waukesha.
Annual fee $20.00 Daily Fee $4.00

MILITARY RIDGE STATE TRAIL- http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/parks/specific/militaryridge/
40 miles long. Connects Dodgeville and Madison. Dirt and paved sections. Paved between Verona and Madison.

SUGAR RIVER STATE TRAIL- http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/Org/land/parks/specific/sugarriver/
23 miles long. In and around New Glarus and Monticello.
